Celebrating Our Mothers
In United States of America, and few other countries of the world, a day is separated to recognize the virtues of mothers in our homes. Scriptures also thought us in Ten Commandments that we should “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you Exodus 20: 12 This is the first law with covenant to human race from God almighty. The word “mother” or “mothers” appears almost 300 times, and the word “mother in law” appears 11 times in the Bible.
For our mothers they have a unique and vital role in childbearing and nurturing little ones. Women have a particular need for support and protection because physically, they are “weaker vessels” (1Peter 3:7). As weak as women are, the Bible acknowledges and celebrates the priceless value of a virtuous women whenever they surface on earth. (Prov. 12:4, 31:10; 1 Cor 11:7). Among these women mentioned in Bible includes but are not limited to the following: Sarah, Mary, the mother of Jesus, Sallome, Elizabeth, Ruth, Eunice, Lois, Hannah, Rachel, Rebecca, Eve, Bathsheba, and many more.
These distinguished mothers have different characters that the Word of God wants us to know about and their relationship with God as well as in the community they lived.
Mothers life like Sarah in the Bible should characterized by humility, meekness, hospitality, faithfulness, deep affection for her husband, sincere love towards God and hope that never died. Sarah’s faith was also unparalleled when she stepped out in faith to follow her husband out of Ur to dwell or live in the land of promise in a foreign nation.
There is a great lesson to learn from Sarah as it was recorded that years after the Lord’s promise, Sarah had harbored hope for so long. Most women would have given up long before the fulfillment. A lesser woman might have despaired of ever seeing God promise fulfilled and turned to paganism Heb. 11:11. That is what made Sarah so extraordinary and our mothers should emulate these good virtues: Trust and hope in the Lord’s promise. All these does not make Sarah a non-fallible person. Everyone has his or her own mistakes: we are all human. However, let your goodness rank ahead of your lesser attitude. You cannot be an Angel in the Church but a Devil in the homes! You cannot consistently be an instrument of destruction in the society
We may be challenged or motivated by the several situations of life, remember that struggles and temptations will ever present in human race.
Pass down the good virtues to the next generation by all means and ensure that you make corrections when faults are spotted. That is what makes one a reliable child of God. A mother’s influence is also stressed in the book of Ezekiel 16 verse 44 where it is written: “As is the mother, so is her daughter”. Study any of these women mentioned above or anyone you know at all: which one inspire you. Or are you inspired by any one lives or the lives of their children?
In the same vain, let us live a life that will inspire and have positive impact in the lifes of the ones coming behind us.
To all our Mothers, we wish you a Happy Mother’s Day.
